[00:00:06] Oh!

[00:00:07] Oh!

[00:00:08] Oh!

[00:00:09] Oh!

[00:00:10] Oh!

[00:00:11] Oh!

[00:00:12] Oh!

[00:00:13] Oh my god, it smells of feet in here.

[00:00:15] I mean, it just hits you immediately, doesn't it?

[00:00:18] It's hot, like, feet, fudge, right up your nose.

[00:00:21] You're being a white floppy cock, Rebecca.

[00:00:23] Why haven't you told Ted yet?

[00:00:25] Oh, I'm going to...

[00:00:26] When? I can't know that. Welcome to another episode of the Revisited podcast. I'm Ben and I'm Kristen. This week we are covering Ted Lasso season one, episode nine, all apologies.

[00:01:40] By Nerf. You got through it.

[00:01:43] Oh, yeah.

[00:01:44] Oh, yeah.

[00:01:45] It's been in my head all day.

[00:01:47] Has it?

[00:01:47] Yeah.

[00:01:48] It's a good album. but I'm sure he'll understand. Well, our Thanksgiving is awesome because we wear pajamas. And we eat all day. Sold. Yeah. I will just have to make a stop at a store to get my ingredients for my mac and cheese. Perfect. Don't be offended if I don't like it.

[00:03:01] You don't eat mac and cheese?

[00:03:02] Oh no, you're a blue box mac and cheese.

[00:03:04] A blue box only, girl.

[00:03:06] You will at least have to try. They probably do now because there's lots of transplants there, but we're not a mac and cheese people. I Just realized I don't remember who it was But somebody had messaged me on Facebook After we had this conversation last time about Thanksgiving foods and they were like you guys were making me so hungry

[00:04:22] And we're already doing it again

[00:04:27] I could talk about food all And I looked, it's funny because I looked on Reddit. And? I don't think we ever, no, I mean,

[00:05:41] I looked on like the Ted Lasso Reddit specifically

[00:05:44] to see if we ever get the punchline to that joke.

[00:05:47] It is completely unresolved. to do about Roy and Beard gets back with his girlfriend, but kind of, but like, and also yells at Ted and Nate, Nate even stands up to Ted and runs away from him. And Kili is, is, you know, talking about her vibrator, like, there's just so, for 31 minutes, they really pack in a lot of story. Yeah. So you know what, let's, let's dive into it then only thing really, and this isn't really a spoiler, you can edit it out later if you want to, but you know, the only thing I can see being a potential spoiler on the rocks. You know, when we see Ted come in because Roy is sitting there, he's watching the news reports and he's the news reports are saying that he's he's slowing down.

[00:09:42] He feels it in his bones.

[00:09:43] That's why he's in there looking like a brunette Oscar the grouch. Um, but he, if you know anything about Brett Goldstein, he is a huge fan of the Muppets. And there is a picture online of, I don't have to see if I can

[00:11:04] find it, um, to show an ice bath or a hot tub.

[00:12:24] Like either, either one, when you go underneath the water, it's like this series of like waves of, and then you have beard that yells at Ted. Yeah, I was, that was the other one I was gonna bring up to is beard shocking, like, Ted getting another shock to his system from beard kind of flashing out. Yeah. At Ted for the first time. Yeah. You know, cause these two have been together for a number of years and this takes him so much by surprise

[00:13:41] that this is probably the first time this has happened.

[00:13:45] Sure, looks like it.

[00:14:47] Let me see. What else do we have? Yeah, because they have Danny singing the theme music. So, let's talk about, you know, we get, we talk about shocks to the system. And I think

[00:14:55] that's a good way to kind of approach this episode, because you mentioned the shock to

[00:14:59] the system that Rebecca gets from Rupert. way I think about change the way that she said it would change the way I feel about it. That's it. Yeah. Yeah. It would change how I feel about you. Yeah. And then she walks off and on that, Kili is just like, look, man, I don't need you in my life. I think that Rebecca's not used to people not needing her in her life and just telling her as it is. So that is definitely, I think, the beginning of Rebecca

[00:17:41] trying to make things right with Ted.

[00:17:44] And her first attempt just goes horribly. He must sound like others at that moment. Yeah, he's kind of like, this is what I sound like. It's terrible. But what I love about that too, and it's also more to the endearingness of Ted, is that like he's just kind of take, he's just listening. He asks if she's doing okay, but he doesn't pressure her.

[00:19:00] He's just like, you do it all right.

[00:19:02] And then just let's her kind of go.

[00:19:05] And she's like, gone back into hiding. She has a cloud over her head that she's hiding in the shadow of. She's still in her tall tower. Yes, and it's not until very shortly after this scene with her and Ted in Rebecca's office

[00:20:24] that that changes. or that. It's the way he says, I just didn't want to have a baby with. And then he backs up. That's a stab to the heart. He did that because he wanted to hurt her. You know, oh, I didn't want you to, I, you needed to hear it for me. No, you just wanted outside of that moment, yeah, there is never a moment where there is any redemption for Rupert. Right. And you're right. He is an absolutely disgusting person. And like I said, you feel as an audience member, you feel that doesn't even measure up to how awful rupert continues to be that's a good way to look at it i never really saw it that way in that. She is seeing rupert use other people to get back at her and that makes her realize the actions that she's been doing the same way.

[00:25:28] She's hit the bottom so it doesn't matter if she comes clean to ten hour not that costs her everything she feels in that particular moment she has already lost it all.

[00:25:33] Which is interesting because just a few hours prior to this she was.

[00:25:45] Add a photo shoot for women in football yeah and you know just going about her day thinking everything was you know the way that it should be and who cares about any of this.

[00:25:49] And then yeah and then you see just a few short hours later. That's new. I loved that. Well, that's new. But I mean, like, and again, like I said, how like we feel for Rebecca when she's face-to-face with Rupert, this is the prime example of how this show does a great job of being able to make you feel absolutely gutted emotionally

[00:27:04] into and just completely turn it around on a dime to make you feel better.

[00:27:06] Yeah. We, I mentioned earlier how we've met the real Rebecca, but she's still in hiding. She's no longer in hiding now at this point. No, in fact, you see later at the end of the episode, she is offering to share her biscuits

[00:28:24] with Higgins.

[00:28:25] Yeah. you see everything that he goes through. I mean, he forgave Michelle for divorcing him almost immediately. We see later in the series how he forgives others that have wronged him. And I think that that is just, it's such an incredible sign of strength

[00:29:41] when someone is able to forgive another person

[00:29:44] and move on in the way that this entire scene was written. I love that Ted just kind of lets it go. And he's like, hey, it's good to see you. Come on down here. You know, he brings... And that's one of my... And that's one of my... And that's one of my... And that's one of my...

[00:31:00] And that's one of my...

[00:31:01] And that's one of my...

[00:31:02] And that's one of my...

[00:31:03] And that's one of my...

[00:31:04] And that's one of my...

[00:31:05] And that's one of my...

[00:31:05] And that's one of my...

[00:31:06] And that's one of my...

[00:31:07] And that's one of my...

[00:31:08] And that's one of my... read a little bit. And then Higgens wronged her. He did Higgens. We can't forget this Higgens wronged her. Now she wronged him right back and she put him in an uncomfortable position over and over and over again. And she needed to apologize to him. He did apologize to her

[00:32:23] last episode and it was genuine and heartfelt. So think it's that moment where you start to realize, okay or with his van dyke. It's not part of the soundtrack. It's actually Higgins just strumming the bloodstream on the upright. And it's just, God, it's so well done.

[00:35:02] And I love Higgins.

[00:35:05] I, you know, said this before, obviously, but they didn't veer off from that story that they had to do. Yeah. I mean, I know when this show ended after season three, so many people were like, no, we want more, we want more. And I was one of them. But the more we re-watch this series and the more we kind of dive into it every week,

[00:36:20] the more I kind of like, you know what?

[00:36:23] I'm good.

[00:36:24] Like, yeah, wouldn't have been great

[00:36:26] to get more AFC Richmond into like a third or four season and blah, blah, blah, blah. No, I need more. I want more. I will never stop wanting more. Maybe my perspective will change by the time we're into the third season. And I'm like, nope, I want more now. Yeah, you're going to be there. Yeah, you're going to be there. Don't worry. You'll get there. Maybe it's just because we're back in season one and I'm kind of like, um, OK, I'm satisfied.

[00:37:42] So, um, but so we talked about Rebecca and Ted.

[00:37:46] We talked about Rebecca and Hagan this, oh, and then he has that hilarious conversation with Ted in his kitchen. But then at the very end of this episode, you see him walk in, still a captain, still a boss, still has command of that locker room, and announces himself in his own Roy Kent way that he is

[00:39:02] going to be on second team now. And by the way, second team he knows it's what needs to be done. He doesn't want to do it. So he goes to confront Roy and Roy lashes out. I mean, you know, and I think rightfully so, but not maybe not. It's just, it's one of the situations where Roy is having a hard time except accepting that.

[00:40:22] And for good reason.

[00:40:25] I mean, he even tells Keely like turned it off and moved on with my life. And Dave's like, let's see what happens here. And I'm like, for the second watch, that I never saw before. Yeah, well, because this is the only episode, I think, in the series that ends this way,

[00:41:41] where there's actually stuff happening during the credit,

[00:41:44] because usually it's black screen credits.

[00:41:46] Right, right.

[00:41:47] This time it's not. Yeah. He's starting to believe in Ted Lasso. And that's exactly what it goes back to the first episode when Beard says he's going to be pissed when he'll be furious when he goes, I was going to hate it when we win him over. Yeah.

[00:43:00] And they've won him over.

[00:43:03] Yeah.

[00:43:04] Because they didn't force him into any situation.

[00:43:06] They led him into making his own decision. Well jay is kind of already gone through those things we just don't see it as an audience. He still has a lot more to go. Oh, he still has more growth to make. Absolutely. He's got a long way to go. Roy's, but just if we could just go to Roy and Ted's conversation in the kitchen.

[00:44:20] I've had Ted's flat.

[00:44:22] I think it's more with Ted. And I just, and I love it. Like when it comes to the team, he has to keep up that exterior because that's the, he's the captain.

[00:45:40] He's gotta be the leader.

[00:45:42] He's gotta be the man in charge.

[00:45:44] The one to lead the team.

[00:45:46] But he's okay letting his guard down now

[00:45:48] a little bit earlier in earlier episodes how they make you kind of lead to believe They kind of make you believe that there's a possibility Ted might have a drinking problem, which is not the case

[00:47:06] At least we're gonna find out further. It's it's been a while since I have, but I know I have in the past. See, there you go. Yeah. Yeah, go ahead. Why was just gonna see if we were gonna go anymore with Roy or if we could turn it over to Beard?

[00:48:22] Let me see.

[00:48:25] We did mention a lot about Roy. Oh, like never mind. And it looked like it was crunchy peanut butter. Well, but what, what, not? Well, I'm a creamy over crunchy too, but I'm okay with crunchy now. But it just looks worse. Oh yeah, it does. This is what I'm saying. The fat that Ted has two day old pasta water on the stove.

[00:49:43] Shows his mental state.

[00:49:46] It's pasta water.

[00:49:47] You dump it in the sink, be cleaned for two days. Yes then we never get a, we never get the punchline. I know. Never. Maybe we get it later. I don't think we do. That's a bummer.

[00:52:21] Because again, I five, Rainbow. Oh, okay. So I guess we do get the resolution to it. And it was Whom. Whom? Whom? Wait a minute. So the fact that Beard remembers that.

[00:53:42] I mean, this could be spoiler, but it's not.

[00:53:46] It's resolution. not seeing the forest through the trees on this one, because Ted is not somebody who is that singularly focused that he loses sight of what their goal is. And in this instance, he did lose sight of his goal and beard needed to shock his system a little bit on that one. Well, yeah, because I mean, you bring all that up because it's funny is when he says that,

[00:55:02] in that moment where he kind of lashes out at Ted, he slams the table, he lashes out at Ted,

[00:56:01] Agreed. 100%.

[00:56:11] So, you know, that's not fully on Ted. But for right now, Ted needs to still

[00:56:21] realize that he is not a college coach anymore. He is a professional coach. And that is different, and the stakes are higher. And I think that the audience also needed to be reminded of that too.

[00:57:22] as the audience needed to be reminded. It's like, hey, it's all well and good that Ted

[00:57:25] is this happy-go-lucky, extremely positive,

[00:57:27] wants to help everybody person,

[00:57:29] but he's there to do a job.

[00:57:31] Right.

[00:57:32] We needed, as an audience, needed to be reminded

[00:57:35] of that as well.

[00:57:37] And that there are repercussions to them not winning.

[00:57:41] It's great that they're learning lessons,

[00:57:43] but they need to win.

[00:57:44] It's beautifully written, so a proper pub. Yeah. I got to get to England. I really want to go to an English pub. I really do. On a rainy day in the middle of the English countryside.

[00:59:03] Oh, I know your dream because you want to sing pub songs and all that fun stuff. but later it is said as well, the body truly is a miracle. And I think that that really goes to kind of another theme of the episode with the effect that stress and grief and forgiveness takes on our bodies. And we start off with a broken Roy in a trash can

[01:00:23] and we end with this, with Roy who has gone through exact same line as said later in the episode. And so I was like, okay, they're clearly trying to tell us something here. So I just kind of think about it and meditate on it for a little bit. And that's kind of what I came up with. We didn't really touch base either on, we get a little bit more to the dynamic of Roy and Phoebe. In this episode, because Phoebe is seriously just one of the best characters.

[01:01:45] And it's more, it's close her eyes and describe Roy. Yeah. And it's the most adorable thing because not once does she say football player, you know, his beard is scruffy. And he scratches a lot. He wears a lot. Yeah. He swears a lot and he's funny and I love him.

[01:03:02] And I love him.

[01:03:04] It's it's so adorable. episodes, but one of my favorite things that Rebecca says to Rupert is you're almost 70 right now. By the time that she's by the time that she's of age, you're going to be a pile of dust in a black hammock's card. I just thought that was hilarious. I have a couple actually. Somebody ordered a Royal in the Rocks, which I mentioned earlier

[01:04:24] when Ted first walks into that. We mentioned that you is gold. Everything. I mentioned that I never know how to react when the grown man does the Carlton in front of me. I also, like what Ted's talking about, the Fresh Prince of Bel Air and how he said he was gonna stop watching when they switched Ant Vives.

[01:05:42] And he was like, but I was always gonna take a moment

[01:05:44] and sit right there.

[01:05:45] Yeah.

[01:05:47] And then he gets in's beard and he gives it a tug at the very end. Kind of like a, your beard, man, shape up. You got this. I'm looking to see if there's any, no, they don't have, I was looking at IMDB to see if they had any listed quotes

[01:07:01] and they don't have any worth seeing

[01:07:03] that we haven't already said.

[01:07:05] Yeah.

[01:07:06] Well, they're love a little bit later on, too, when they're back in the locker room right before Tet or right before Roy comes in. And, you know, Ted's getting ready to address the team and beard comes in and they kind of nod as in like, yeah, we're okay. Yeah. And Nate comes in. He's like, I realize this isn't the best time to apologize. But I was losing sleep

[01:08:22] over this. And he's like, it's, you know what, Nate, we're good. But do

[01:08:25] me a favor, apologize to me in yourness. I don't know about that. So many uncomfortable conversations, Ted with Beard and Nate, Rebecca and Rupert, Rebecca

[01:09:42] and Keeley, Rebecca and Ted, Ted and Roy.

[01:09:45] It all worked out mostly, but'm gonna feel so much better, but I have to get through that hard part first. Yeah. Yeah, and I see that, but yeah, you're right. I don't think it's uncomfortable. I think it's just necessarily hard,

[01:11:01] necessarily difficult.

[01:11:03] I think it's needed for sure.

[01:11:06] Needed.

[01:11:07] Yeah, absolutely.

[01:12:04] like the repetitive jokes, not repetitive.

[01:12:08] The jokes that they come back and they come back and they come back.

[01:12:09] And sometimes it's over the course of the season

[01:12:11] and sometimes it's over the course of the episode.

[01:12:13] And that's what we had here.

[01:12:17] Ted say teenage girls are a macellian playful and mysterious.

[01:12:22] Talking about Rebecca and the football ad.

[01:12:25] Keely said, just don't think it has the same ring with an American accent as it does in a British one and probably my favorite throwaway joke in the entire series oh she might find my vibrator that's gonna be a problem for most of the electronics I was

[01:13:42] giggling incessantly the first I don't think that he did. I think this came as a true surprise to him. I think I think just based on the visuals of his face, once he said about it made sense

[01:15:04] to her or to something. I don't think he knew to the degree.

[01:16:20] Yes, I was about to say the exact same thing.

[01:16:22] Yeah, I think he was shocked because I don't think

[01:16:25] he realized the degree of what was happening. I don't care. Always have to be in agreement of everything. No, never. Ready player one. What? God, don't start. Don't start with that one. All right. We have a voicemail from Steve Brown. Hello, Ben and Kristen good perspective. Beard and Nate both ignoring Ted Higgins playing jazz upright bass is just incredible. Keeley just said our body is a miracle and isn't the same thing

[01:19:01] Danny Rojas just said a few scenes ago the body is a miracle. Beard is vocalizing Yeah, that's wonderful. I also forgot that I wanted to just mention from Greg's voicemail when he mentions the new teeth push out the old teeth. And I think that that's another theme of this episode, you know, is that we are we're out with the old and in with the new.

[01:20:20] And I just like the subtle ways that they wrote that into the script.

[01:20:25] Well, and it's also appropriate that ballads of songbirds and snakes. Okay, go see it. It's the best Hunger Games movie of the four

[01:21:42] of the five. I'll fight you on it. I will. It was, think that it's my favorite. It's my favorite one. Do you know what it is? I don't think I do. It is Muppet Christmas Carol. Oh, then you know what? We're just going to share that one because that is. So I have my, I have two traditions. I watch a bunch of holiday movies throughout the year and I'll recommend a different one today. But acting is fantastic. The story. Well, it's Dickens. I mean, it's... Well, right. Yeah. But they do it really well, you know? I mean, there are less successful versions of Christmas Carol, but I just think that

[01:24:21] Muppet Christmas Carol is just...

[01:24:24] It's Christmas. challenge, which is the actual television show, the actual competition show of the TV show, Squid Game on Netflix. Without the murder. Without the murder. Yes, exactly. Without the murder. Yeah. I got so heated at times and like, I cannot express how much I yelled at my television

[01:25:47] watching the end. Oh, that I think we've had this discussion. Yeah. discussion. But it up until the end is fantastic. It's great. I love that Ryan Reynolds and

[01:27:01] Will Ferro are just amazing. And Michelle Lasso is in the movie too. Oh, she is Ryan
