[00:00:00] Mmm? Ahh!
[00:00:03] Mmm.
[00:00:05] One cats to go.
[00:00:07] You got ourselves a tie game.
[00:00:10] That's work.
[00:00:13] Fellas, we're broken.
[00:00:16] We need to change.
[00:00:18] And look, I know change can be scary.
[00:00:20] One minute, you're playing Freeze Tag.
[00:00:23] Out there at recess with all your buddies.
[00:00:25] Next thing you know, you're getting zits, your voice gets low. I'm referring to Lady that would have worked. I mean, you could have gone like just called it Letting Go. I mean, because that's a huge. Oh, but see, if it's a show about Ted Lasso,
[00:03:02] he's not letting go of anything anytime soon.
[00:03:04] This is also true.
[00:03:05] This is also true. more chillier months, which means the beard grows out. So you can't really tell on the video, and people listening can't tell it all unless you see me in person, but the part under my chin, I grow out more than anything else. And to avoid it getting like curly and really bushy and actually
[00:04:20] keeping it looking decent, I call him. It, they're so good. So enough of that. Yeah, let's get into this episode season five of the show, Brett was actually originally brought on as one of the writers of the show before he was cast as a recant. Well, he's executive story editor for the show.
[00:07:00] Okay.
[00:07:01] He remains a writer throughout the series.
[00:07:03] Yep.
[00:07:04] But that was initially why he was first brought on was to be one of the head writers of the
[00:07:08] series. Lawrence and Brendan Hunter are the creators of the show and the head writers of the show. But I think I think Brett Goldstein is just as much a contributor. Yeah, I tried to see if Nick Mohammed was also one of the writers just because I know that he writes that he writes for other shows and he wasn't.
[00:08:25] So that makes me a little sad just because it would have been fun if it was like the Well, I had to get their attention. Oh, okay. Brett Goldstein also has actually been touring lately. Oh, cool. He's in the States. He hasn't come anywhere close to Philadelphia, but the moment that he does, I am getting tickets to that show and I'm going to that show. That's awesome.
[00:09:40] So, I'm looking forward to the day that he actually does come around to Philadelphia.
[00:09:46] I really enjoy Brett Goldstein. I mean, he kind of was a little sad about it. And they were like, no, no, it's you. You, you've got the role. And that's how he became Roy Kent. That's amazing. And I also wrote, um, shrinking. Yes. With, um, Jason Segal and Harrison Ford.
[00:11:00] Yes, which I hadn't had the chance to watch.
[00:11:03] I haven't either, mainly because I'm not a Jason Segal fan, like I used to be.
[00:12:06] The other final thing I will say about Brett Goldstein too is that one of the things I love about him as a person and I find really endearing is he is and has been a lifelong fan of the
[00:12:12] Muppets.
[00:12:15] There is a video out there and I encourage you to look for it if you can.
[00:12:18] It's on YouTube of him performing one of supportive in, it makes you wonder about conversations
[00:13:40] are happening at home because she tells Higgins,
[00:13:42] tell your boss, I hope,
[00:13:43] and I can't remember exactly what she says,
[00:13:46] but it's, it's, it moves the plot forward nicely without having anything to me that's like really noteworthy.
[00:15:06] Yeah.
[00:15:07] Well.
[00:16:02] and I hate Michelle. Oh, I don't think,
[00:16:05] and this might be a little daring to say,
[00:16:07] I don't think that ever changes about Michelle.
[00:16:10] No, no, it never changes about Michelle.
[00:16:13] And we can talk about that later too.
[00:16:14] Yeah, we could talk about that a little bit later.
[00:16:16] This is the episode I wanna talk about spoilers
[00:16:19] more than I wanna talk about the episode.
[00:16:21] How's that?
[00:16:22] So I don't have a lot to say about this episode
[00:16:24] without talking about spoilers.
[00:16:26] And that's one thing, it's one thing to be like, oh, I'm on the other side of the field, I'm just gonna be lazy about it and not check on him. He purposely stepped over him. It's yeah, it's absolutely intentional.
[00:17:41] Yes.
[00:17:41] What Jamie did.
[00:17:43] And every single goal, he's like me, me, me.
[00:17:46] And I'm like, oh my gosh, I hate you.
[00:17:48] I hate you so much. about Jamie that I never noticed before. When I tell me. When Keeley goes to Jamie's apartment to return his key and everything, did you happen to notice that every lamp in Jamie's apartment is a gun? No. Yes. What an idiot. Every lamp, it's not just a gun.
[00:19:03] They're golden guns.
[00:19:05] But why? Well, they worked because when we get to some future things, which again, we'll discuss in more detail later, there has to be a turn and they wanted that turn. I feel like to be as drastic as possible with change. It had to feel like it was this huge moment for that turn to happen.
[00:20:21] Well, and we're going to link to it for five episodes too.
[00:20:24] Yeah.
[00:20:25] You know, it's been, you know, he's a lot of correlation between both of the stories that are happening even so much in so that by the end of this episode, we get the first of what becomes many coach lasso speeches like these big motivational speeches where he's addressing the team in the locker room and this is where he slaps believe
[00:22:42] And that's what I'll call them. They are moments of beard where like he is a total mystery.
[00:22:50] Like he is incredibly intelligent.
[00:22:54] Like he knows the terms for certain things.
[00:22:57] There's something that happens in the next episode
[00:22:59] that like he just comes out and he calls it
[00:23:02] this scientific thing and you're like,
[00:23:03] how do you know that?
[00:23:05] Yeah. Well, because really is. But by the end of the episode, you're kind of like, that was a weird journey, but that was amazing. But I loved it. Yeah. I actually ended up loving every second of that. As Danny would say, I am here for that.
[00:24:23] But yeah, so like, you know, you know for him to crack because he's so positive and he's so he can compartmentalize really well.
[00:25:43] And people that compartmentalize really well, like I'm one of them.
[00:26:43] locker room is kind of a huge revelation for Ted himself. I feel like he kind of comes to a realization in that moment when he's addressing the team.
[00:26:49] Like he sees a situation that's very similar to something that he's going on to in his
[00:26:54] personal life.
[00:26:55] So addressing the team and giving the team this advice, he's almost giving himself advice
[00:27:01] at the same time.
[00:27:03] I know we usually do quotes, but I feel like it's kind of way you can truly help her be happy. And then that's when he says, obviously by her, I'm referring to lady football and coach with the good say. Good say. Yeah. He himself has just come to a realization because just before that, we get that whole moment with Michelle telling Ted, I don't feel the same. So then I was wrong. When he does the me thing, that is this episode. That's what I'm saying. Yeah. Thank you. I apologize. It's on the second page, which is why. See, my confidence is not there anymore because I was wrong about something last week. And so now my confidence is gone. But yeah, so he's sitting there and me, me, me, me.
[00:29:40] And then Ted just goes up.
[00:29:41] This is one of my favorite moments is he runs up
[00:29:44] to go ask Rebecca if he could bench Jamie.
[00:29:46] And she's just like, I of them were on the team. None of the players were really, like none of the players fought it.
[00:31:00] No, they...
[00:31:01] Beard didn't fight it.
[00:31:03] They were just kind of like, that speech, Nate is standing next to Macadoo and Macadoo slides over and paths the bench for Nate to sit.
[00:32:21] That was a huge moment.
[00:32:23] Huge moment because they're the slide that didn't go all the way up You know he's looking at his phone and that's because Ted is just very excited about You know Michelle and Henry coming to visit when they first show up and he's talking to the team saying like We're gonna practice until we get this right and then they show up and he's like practice his cancel
[00:33:42] Bolting across the field. There's like one of the mean, you're right. Ted then it's kind of shattered in say about the fish and chips is that I've never really enjoyed fish and chips ever. Like I've never wanted to order them. Well, no, no, no. I've never, I've never really wanted to eat them or them. Nothing. Like I'm just like, I don't understand why anybody wants fish sticks because. Like, and I get the whole having them in Rhode Island kind of ruined you for fish and chips ever. Because I had lobster in Maine. Oh, and you're ruined. And because of that, I'm lo- I'm lo- I'm ruined with lobster. When you go to Rhode Island next week, find fish and chips.
[00:39:03] Well, I don't want it ruined for me, though.
[00:39:06] It's worth it.
[00:39:07] It's so good. Ted Lasso, I have never been to the UK, but I know if I ever do go to the UK, which I hope to one day, I will not consider my trip complete until I get fish and chips. David and I have our 15th wedding anniversary coming up next in the spoiler territory. Oh I have other stuff to talk about before we go into spoiler territory. I that particular thing. I want to save for for spoiler Because it ties into something that is later Well, what's the other thing that you had? Jamie's beer promotion thing that he did was the most ridiculous thing and I love it that his
[00:42:44] like, well, is this because we kind of like confided in each other before? And he's like, oh, that's exactly why we're doing it.
[00:42:46] Yeah.
[00:42:47] You know, and, you know, we see that Rebecca is still fighting Rebecca.
[00:42:53] Yes.
[00:42:54] She is trying so hard to not be like that person.
[00:43:04] Is this the episode or is it and they did and like seeing Roy being the captain Not just of the team, but of his teammates like yes seeing this this character that we have kind of been
[00:44:23] What's the word I'm looking for?
[00:45:43] We've kind of been shown to show this really rough that slap has so much impact. Yes. Because he literally just slapped every member of the team in the face. Yeah, he did. By slapping the side. He did. Not in a derogatory way. No. It's a wake up call. Right. And that's probably the most emotionally charged that they've seen him so far. Yeah.
[00:45:44] Until next episode.
[00:45:45] Oh, yeah.
[00:45:47] We'll talk about that too. But when she offers Keely a job, like would you wanna do this more for other teammates? Yeah. Are you talking about what she says? Just give it a thought, unless you wanna carry on doing, what is it that you do again?
[00:47:00] I'm sort of famous for being almost famous.
[00:47:03] Well, no, that, Kili's going to look right through it. So she can be herself with Kili. You know, even in the conversation that they have in the press room when Jamie is giving his, his beer ad and, you know, Rebecca said, in the world, but Rebecca says, you know, like, didn't you,
[00:48:20] like, didn't you dump him and like they're talking, girl talk, because there's already a friendship The actor? And it's a good impression. I do like it at the very end when that old man goes wanker. Good job today. I love seeing the early, what we're assuming at this point is the very flirtatious nature
[00:49:41] of Roy and Geely.
[00:49:44] Because, and this is like, uh, you, you can't get mad at me. You broke up with me. Yeah. Less than 24 hours ago. This is literally the night before. And he's like, well, what did you expect me to do? Take a shower by myself?
[00:51:00] Like you just admitted you can't do anything on your own.
[00:51:03] Mm hmm.
[00:51:05] You are a child.
[00:51:06] Yes.
[00:51:07] You are a child.
[00:52:02] to Roy and Keeley. I love it because like we see Roy is calling out Keeley
[00:52:08] because he doesn't like the fact that Keeley's with Jamie
[00:52:12] only to find out that Keeley admits she broke up with Jamie.
[00:52:16] And then that's when he seems to get a little flustered
[00:52:18] because he's like, oh, well, I didn't know that.
[00:52:23] And you know, this is the reason why I don't like Jamie
[00:52:26] because he should have passed when he says, I promised I would never quit on anything in my life. Because they're seeing this from two different perspectives.
[00:53:41] And I kind of, as much as I know we say it would have been better. Like you mentioned the Manila envelope of the divorce papers. I think that would have been a little harsh. I would have hated Michelle Moore for doing that. I think that she should have just tried to come out with him and get a fresh start with
[00:55:01] the three of them for at least a couple of months been Michelle and therapist. So, you know, that's kind of a little bit of foreshadowing maybe. Yeah, and I can't remember his name either. It's not worth remembering. He's forgettable. Yeah, it's not worth remembering. Yeah, I think there was at the very least an interest there. And... Because the minute she was done with him,
[00:56:20] she's like, oh Ted, let's get back together.
[00:56:22] Come move back home now that your life is perfect
[00:56:25] over in the UK.
[00:57:26] Couples of characters are different now than different later than they are right now. Yeah, don't think Michelle ever changes
[00:57:33] No, she's very much a static character in my opinion and I'm sure that there's a lot of people that can
[00:57:36] Make Arguments as to why she's changed because she went back to Ted apparently at the end, but I don't know no
[00:57:42] I don't even know if it's ever been true if it's ever truly revealed that her and Ted are back together
[00:57:46] He went in with his suitcases into their home for her and she did nothing. Well, yeah, she said she went to his house. She went to England on her way to Paris with her new boyfriend to drop off her son. Exactly. I mean, yeah, she's horrible, horrible human being. I agree with you 100% agree with you because even in the end, in a final
[00:59:00] conversation, in one of the final conversations between Rebecca and Ted, Rebecca
[00:59:04] says that Michelle and Henry can come over here and start fresh while you continue better for 10 and healthy. Yeah. Mm hmm. Yeah. I don't know why that choice was made for him to go back to Kansas at the end, but I mean this first episode really really proves to me that he never should have gone back to Kansas and in the end I just I
[01:00:26] What a terrible terrible person Michelle Lasso is awful. I
[01:00:29] agree with you. He failed. Yep. But this is what is going to become the Diamond Dogs. God, what have you done to me?
[01:01:41] I hate what you've done to me. Press the button.
[01:01:42] I know. I feel like.
[01:01:43] We're in spoilers.
[01:01:45] And obviously I couldn't grow a beard.
[01:01:48] Otherwise coach and I here would look like back everybody who skipped the spoiler territory to talk about some of our favorite quotes from the episode. And I will start it's it makes me laugh. I don't know why it makes me laugh. There's a moment with when Ted brings home breakfast for for Henry and he talks about the scone
[01:04:02] Do they wrap their fish and newspaper? No, but I wish they did.
[01:04:03] That's just like you to want your food to teach you stuff.
[01:04:06] Yeah.
[01:04:07] Oh, yeah.
[01:04:08] What's the follow up?
[01:04:12] Like learning about Rosa Parks from a donut.
[01:04:16] Yeah.
[01:04:17] There's a whole lot of knowledge just in the hole right there.
[01:04:22] And the only other one I have that I comment as well as a voicemail from our friend Steve Brown. So I'll read the feedback from the internet first from Facebook first and it's from Lindsey
[01:05:42] Schlich on Facebook.
[01:05:44] And she says, kind of strange to realize now that Kaylee's entire career started Ruth with Rebecca giving Keeley the job to screw it up. I think that's actually Keeley, Rebecca like legitimately trying to pick up Keeley. Yes, I agree. I think she's returning the favor in terms of the friendship. Yes, I would agree with that. I think that she,
[01:07:00] the one genuine part of Rebecca right now is Keeley. Yeah, so I don't think she's,
[01:07:05] I don't think Rebecca is giving Keeley that job in hopes that she'll screw it up. I think of last season one, episode five, a tan lines. Didn't, can you say something about tan lines when she saw Rebecca's naked picture? All Leslie's family is so cute. Ted just banged his head and one of the kids, is he dead? Hey, I live in Oklahoma. So that's their code word, whatever truth word. Oh, Jamie didn't waste any time, did he?
[01:08:20] I mean, they weren't on a break.
[01:08:21] She did break up with him.
[01:08:22] Jamie's so unaware.
[01:08:23] She's just by being you.
[01:08:25] Well, you're welcome.
[01:08:26] I don't wanna go long outside and it's all quotes but i should be saying something else and and still laid out on the on the pitch and they're like fighting and stuff all that's right i remember now it where tells him
[01:09:40] in ten just called the the ref uh... highlighter
[01:09:43] the whole tune the whole team the whole team was ignored was not not
[01:09:47] impressed Yep. Well done. So you even put that together. And we didn't even talk about the fact that Oklahoma was their truth word. Yes. Yeah. I loved that they had a truth word. Well, I love that Ted uses it both on Michelle and Rebecca in this episode. He's like Oklahoma.
[01:11:00] She's like, I hate this.
[01:11:01] Yeah.
[01:11:02] Well, I really do enjoy these chats together.
[01:11:04] Oklahoma.
[01:11:05] No, I don't like this at all.
[01:11:06] No, I that was it.
[01:12:23] Any final notes on the episode? on my list and it just got bumped to the top of the list. It's Matthew Perry, Friends, Lovers, and the Terrible Thing. Friends is a huge part of both of our lives. Friends is a big reason why... It is the reason I think we... It's the main reason we connected. Yeah. Friends is... It was in the line of dialogue.
[01:13:41] Yep, it was. It was. It was. Friends has been, thank you as always. Make sure you go to podcast.com, check out some of the other great podcasts that are over there. As we mentioned, there's always something for everybody over there. Remind, pay, recovery, and great British Bake Off and fall at the house of Usher from Netflix on Strange Indeed. Fear of the Walking Dead is
[01:15:02] back. So there's a lot of hate talk going over at podcast. I don't even think they podcast
